It’s exciting that in 2024, hip-hop artists long desired to collaborate are finally doing so. LL Cool J has released The FORCE, his fourteenth album, with Kamaal “Q-Tip” Fareed of A Tribe Called Quest. This project has been in the works since at least 2020; LL last released an album in 2013

The FORCE is a pleasant surprise, showcasing LL’s rhymes and Q-Tip’s production. Despite the lengthy process, it’s LL’s best project in nearly thirty-five years.

The album sounds different than earlier works by both artists. LL has mentioned he needed to “re-learn how to rhyme,” enhancing his skillset over four decades. He brings wisdom to his verses while adjusting his flow.

Q-Tip plays a crucial role, producing nearly all tracks. He crafts dynamic beats that fit LL’s style, providing hooks and ad-libs without dropping verses. His production shines in singles like “Saturday Night Special” and “Proclivities.”

LL energetically performs on “Basquiat Energy,” reflecting on his impact in hip-hop. He raps about his beginnings with enthusiasm and motivation for future success.

The lengthy process to complete The FORCE does not appear to have affected its quality.

LL delivers a spirited performance on “Basquiat Energy,” considering his four-decade impact. “Sent Rick a demo and he said it was a go,” he raps, reflecting on his journey
