Shalamar, one of the most influential R&B and soul groups of the late 1970s and early 1980s, brought a unique blend of funk, disco, and smooth soul to the music industry. The group, originally formed as a studio project, evolved into a dynamic trio featuring Howard Hewett, Jeffrey Daniels, and Jody Watley. Their groundbreaking contributions to music, fashion, and dance continue to influence artists today.

The Rise of Shalamar

Shalamar was initially assembled by Soul Train creator Don Cornelius and talent agent Dick Griffey in 1977. The group’s early lineup underwent changes, but it was with the arrival of Howard Hewett as lead vocalist, alongside dancer Jeffrey Daniels and singer Jody Watley, that Shalamar reached its peak.

Musical Success and Iconic Hits

During their peak years, Shalamar released a string of hit albums and singles that dominated the R&B and pop charts. Songs like The Second Time Around, A Night to Remember, Take That to the Bank, and Make That Move became timeless classics, showcasing their ability to merge upbeat disco grooves with romantic ballads.

Innovating Dance and Fashion

Jeffrey Daniels was instrumental in bringing innovative dance styles to mainstream audiences, notably introducing the Moonwalk years before Michael Jackson made it famous. Jody Watley became a fashion icon, setting trends in style and image that would later influence her successful solo career.

Legacy and Influence

Although the original trio eventually parted ways to pursue individual careers, their impact on music remains strong. Howard Hewett became a successful solo artist, Jody Watley emerged as a Grammy-winning solo performer, and Jeffrey Daniels continued his work in choreography and music.

Shalamar’s influence can still be seen in contemporary R&B and dance music, as their pioneering sound and style continue to inspire new generations of artists.
